Meet Gabby Gasser!
Major: Computer Science
We asked Gabby to answer some questions for us about why she decided to participate in Alternative Breaks and what she loves most about it. So here are her answers!
Which Alternative Break(s) have you previously participated in?
WINGS (Charleston, SC)
What is your favorite thing about Alternative Breaks?
My favorite thing about Alternative Breaks is bonding over a shared experience of spending a week volunteering with an organization for a cause that we all feel passionately about. While the ride back doesn’t have the excitement as the ride to the break, the comradery and bonds that were created over the week are really felt in that ride.
What was your favorite thing you learned from Alternative Breaks?
I learned so much it is difficult to pick out one thing I can consider my favorite, but something that was extremely eye opening for me was witnessing different walks of life than what I was used to. Just experiencing the cultural differences between South Carolina and Kansas and Burns Elementary School and the elementary schools I attended. But it was also refreshing to notice that no matter the differences, kids are just kids and the elementary schoolers I worked with in Charleston reminded me of my campers from when I was a camp counselor and my younger siblings.
What is your favorite memory from Alternative Breaks?
My favorite memory from my Alternative Break would have to be our last day working with WINGS. We had a dance party with the kids and they taught us how to do different dances and danced with them. They might have been around ten years younger than me, but every single one of them could out dance me and their skills far surpassed mine. But having the kids try and teach me their moves and then laughing as I continually got them wrong was a great way to let loose and end the experience on a fun and memorable note.
What is a random fact about yourself?
One of my hobbies is special effects makeup. The gory make up you see in a variety of movies or the face paint that you can get at Renaissance Fairs and carnivals is what I like to do in my free time.
