Meet Halle Mccourt!

Year: Junior

Major: Environmental Studies Minor: Business and Global and International Studies

We asked Halle to answer some questions for us about why she decided to participate in Alternative Breaks and what she loves most about it. So here are her answers!

Which Alternative Break(s) have you previously participated in?

Spring Break 2013: Milwaukee Urban Ecology Center

Winter Break 2015: Everglades National Park

What is your favorite thing about Alternative Breaks?

My favorite thing about Alternative Breaks is the ability to be put in an environment with new faces and in a new place and have the privilege to not only grow through service to the organization that one volunteers for but also to form relationship with the other participants during the break. I met some of my best friends through Alternative Breaks and I am thankful for the positive experience that the organization has provided to my college years.

What was your favorite thing you learned from Alternative Breaks?

My favorite thing that I have learned from Alternative Breaks is the confirmation that I want to do environmental work in my future career. Both breaks that I have gone on have been environmentally focused and I have thoroughly enjoyed the environmental-career knowledge that I have gained while participating in service-related activities. It has also contributed to my knowledge of the non-profit world and the rewards associated with non-profit work.

What is your favorite memory from Alternative Breaks?

My favorite memory from Alternative Breaks would be most recently when I was in the Everglades, my group would go outside at night before we retreated to our tents and look at the stars. Since our campsite was so isolated from any nearby towns, the stars’ visibility was unreal compared to what we are able to see here in Lawrence at night. During those times, I was able to reflect on what had happened during the day and how my group had developed with the work that we did removing invasive species. Although my favorite memory was when I was in the Everglades, I absolutely LOVED my break in Milwaukee. Much love Urban Ecology Center.

What is a random fact about yourself?

Manatees are my favorite animals. Dinosaurs are my favorite animals that are extinct. Unicorns are my favorite animals that never existed.

If what Halle has said makes you want to serve, learn, and grow with us, you can apply for an Alternative Summer Break on our website http://www.kuab.org/summer-breaks!
