AB Participant of the Week: Feb 9

Meet Zachary Bean!

Year: Junior

Major: Biochemistry and Human Sexuality

We asked Zachary to answer some questions for us about why he decided to participate in Alternative Breaks and what he loves most about it. So here are his answers!

Which Alternative Break(s) have you previously participated in?

Utah Pride Center in Salt Lake City, Utah

What is your favorite thing about Alternative Breaks?

My favorite thing about participating in Alternative Breaks is coming together with other

KU students that have a passion for helping their communities. It’s truly a humbling

experience to be surrounded by peers that genuinely love helping people.

What was your favorite thing you learned from Alternative Breaks?

Personally, it taught me a new respect for individuals that dedicate their lives to sexual

and gender equality and actually led me to pursue and attain a research position on

campus regarding sexuality. On a larger scale, I learned that six KU students from a

myriad of departments and grades can really come together to perform a common goal.

What is your favorite memory from Alternative Breaks?

On the job, my favorite memory was working for Equality Utah and calling roughly 1300

numbers to look for supporters of a non-discrimination bill they’re trying to press in

Utah. It felt like I was truly making an impact to their community, even for just a small

amount of time.

What is a random fact about yourself?

I have a permanent curl in one part of my hair from playing with it so often.

If what Zachary has said makes you want to learn, grow and serve with us, you can apply for an Alternative Summer Break on our website http://www.kuab.org/summer-breaks!
