AB Participant of the Week: March 30

Meet Emma Anderson!

Year: Sophomore

Major: Mathematics (UKanTeach)

We asked Emma to answer some questions for us about why she decided to participate in Alternative Breaks and what she loves most about it. So here are her answers

Which Alternative Break(s) have you previously participated in?

I went on the WINGS alternative break to Charleston, South Carolina to volunteer at the Children's Museum of the Lowcountry as well as the WINGS after school program for elementary school students.

What is your favorite thing about Alternative Breaks?

Both the aspects of service learning as well as creating a special bond with my group!

What was your favorite thing you learned from Alternative Breaks?

The kids that we worked with in North Charleston came from a background totally different than mine. It was so beneficial for me to see firsthand the racial and economic disparities in the public schools in Charleston. It made me that much more sure that education is my passion and that a career in it is perfect for me.

What is your favorite memory from Alternative Breaks?

Definitely all the inside jokes between our group as well as the people in Charleston we volunteered with. It was also so fun to have the kids we volunteered with teach us the "Shmoney" dance!

What is a random fact about yourself?

I'm fluent in Swedish and I took a selfie with T-Pain. (And I like curry wurst, that's why it's in my pic)
