Meet Monica Funk!

Year: Sophomore

Major: Mathematics

We asked Monica to answer some questions for us about why she decided to participate in Alternative Breaks and what she loves most about it. So here are her answers

Which Alternative Break(s) have you previously participated in?

Everglades National Park Winter 2015

What is your favorite thing about Alternative Breaks?

My favorite thing about Alternative Breaks is that it gives you the opportunity to go places and do things you might not otherwise have the means to do. And the work you do actually makes a difference.

What was your favorite thing you learned from Alternative Breaks?

My favorite thing I learned was that people can come together and accomplish anything. Like clearing an entire trail of an invasive plant for instance.

What is your favorite memory from Alternative Breaks?

My favorite memories from my break, since we were camping, were cooking dinner over our propane stove with a flashlight and late night conversations in our tents. Another great experience was getting to canoe through mangrove tunnels at a lake in the park. And of course talking to our lovely volunteer coordinators Alice and Louie, they knew everything and shared some great stories!

What is a random fact about yourself?

A random fact: I am a part time gymnastics coach. Also, I was probably one of the only ones on our trip to get away with less than 5 mosquito bites!

If what Monica has said makes you want to serve, learn, and grow with us, check out our Alternative Weekend Breaks on our website http://www.kuab.org/weekend-breaks/
