AB Participant of the Week: April 27

Meet Dakota Dreher!

Year:   Senior

Major:  Cell Biology

We asked Dakota to answer some questions for us about why he decided to participate in Alternative Breaks and what he loves most about it. So here are his answers.

Which Alternative Break(s) have you previously participated in?
Winter 2014: Habitat for Humanity, Fort Worth, TX

What is your favorite thing about Alternative Breaks?

Having the opportunity to help an organization that is in need of volunteers, while getting to spend time learning about the issues the organization faces.

What was your favorite thing you learned from Alternative Breaks?
During the break I participated in, I learned about how much some communities give back to the people. The Habitat for Humanity chapter that my group worked with, built a small neighborhood of homes for deserving individuals. Also, I learned that giving back and volunteering can be done throughout a life time. Many of the volunteers in charge of the Habitat Chapter in Fort Worth, were retired individuals. It was neat seeing people spend his or her retirement helping others instead of helping themselves.

What is your favorite memory from Alternative Breaks?

My favorite memories were from the nights after the work day. Our group spent a lot of time just talking, getting to know each other and hanging out!

What is a random fact about yourself?

I have a fake knee.
