AB Participant of the Week: August 31

Meet Emmaline Lorenzo!

Year: Freshman

Major: Chemistry

We asked Emmaline to answer some questions for us about why she decided to participate in Alternative Breaks and what she loves most about it. So here are her answers.

Which Alternative Break(s) have you previously participated in?

I have participated in the Alternative Winter Break to the Music Therapy Center of Houston this past break.

What is your favorite thing about Alternative Breaks?

My favorite thing about Alternative Breaks was having the opportunity to work with a music therapist, which is an experience that is incredibly unique and I will probably never have again.

What was your favorite thing you learned from Alternative Breaks?

I learned so much about music therapy, and had the chance to see that it really did change kids' lives for the better. Music therapy has the power to treat not only emotional issues, but physical ones as well.

What is your favorite memory from Alternative Breaks?

My favorite memory from my break was getting to design and lead an activity in the music therapy sessions. I partnered with another girl, and we created a listening activity based on the "Cups Song". She would sing while I played the drums, and the kids drummed along and then had to stop and pass their drums when we stopped singing and playing. Seeing the kids respond so positively to our activity was really impressive, and I had fun adapting it to each different age group.

What is a random fact about yourself?

I have been playing clarinet for almost nine years and I stay involved with music at KU by teaching free music lessons through the CCO program "Music Mentors".
