Meet Megan Bricks!

Year: Freshman

Major: Music Education, Dance Minor

We asked Megan to answer some questions for us about why she decided to participate in Alternative Breaks and what she loves most about it. So here are her answers.

Which Alternative Break(s) have you previously participated in?

Winter 2015 - Playworks: Denver, Colorado

What was your favorite thing about Alternative Breaks?

One of my favorite things about Alternative Breaks is the people that I met. As all seven of us volunteered together, we were able to create friendships. We were all there to help make a difference in these students' lives, which brought us closer together as a team.

What was your favorite thing you learned from Alternative Breaks?

As we worked with the students, I learned that by teaching them problem solving techniques, the students are able to solve disputes among themselves. I never thought that having a structured recess could have such a positive impact on the students' behavior in the classroom.

What is your favorite memory from Alternative Breaks?

One of my favorite memories from my Alternative Break was watching students on the playground play Ro Sham Bo (Rock Paper Scissors) to solve a tie or dispute within a game. It was amazing to see these students taking the initiative to settle the issue themselves without violence.

What is a random fact about yourself?

I have bowled since I was four years old. Last summer I qualified and bowling in a national bowling tournament called The Junior Gold Championships, which was held in Buffalo, New York.
