AB Participant of the Week: February 29

Meet Nick Herren!

Year: Junior

Major: Supply Chain Management

We asked Nick to answer some questions for us about why he decided to participate in Alternative Breaks and what he loves most about it. So here are his answers.

Why did you apply for an Alternative Break and why did you pick the site you did?

I chose to participate in an Alternative Break because I love giving back to others through service and I know I can learn more about certain issues I normally wouldn’t be aware of by having a first-hand experience in the Smokey Mountains.

I chose the Cumberland Trials site because I am in love with the outdoors and any opportunity to preserve wildlife and the environment is something I can’t pass up.

What is your favorite thing about Alternative Breaks?

The thing I love the most about AB is being able to interact with people who share the desire to volunteer. You can’t find a group more selfless and motivated to serve anywhere else here at KU.

What is your favorite thing you have learned so far?

Michael Wade Smith spoke to us about how important it is to have intent when working towards a goal. If you have intent, then you are focused on the purpose of whatever you are doing. He motivated the entire group, but especially myself, to discover a deeper focus on why we are volunteering and how we will impact others and the world through what we do.

What is a random fact about yourself?

A random fact about myself is my dream job is to be an Alaskan State Trooper.
