Meet Andrea Johnson!

Year: Sophomore

Major: Social Welfare, Spanish Minor

We asked Andrea to answer some questions for us about why she decided to participate in Alternative Breaks and what she loves most about it. So here are her answers.

Which Alternative Break(s) have you previously participated in?

I participated in the Alternative Winter Break in 2016 for Freedom Foundation in Selma, Alabama!

What is your favorite thing about Alternative Breaks?

My favorite thing about Alternative Breaks is the program itself and just that it allows like-minded students to come together and do meaningful work during breaks! I think that the purpose of the organization is just beautiful!

What was your favorite thing you learned from Alternative Breaks?

In my Alternative Break, I learned that my calling in life is something totally different from what I had imagined. Being on my break, it all just became clear to me that what I had been planning to do with my life was a good thing, but not exactly what I'm called to do. The break completely changed my life and gave my insight into ways that I can give back to my own community and hometown!

What is your favorite memory from Alternative Breaks?

I have SO MANY amazing memories from the break, but my absolute favorite was probably just growing with my teammates. We all went in with completely different mindsets and weren't really on the same page at all. But day by day, we would come together and really fight for unity and to better understand each other! It was so hard at first but I can honestly say that the struggle was good and it's beautiful to look back on! I gained new friends in my teammates, which is contrary to what I expected going into it!

What is a random fact about yourself?

A random fact about myself is that I can do the worm :)
