AB Participant of the Week: March 14

Meet Kimberly Francis!

Year: Sophomore

Major: Psychology and Social Welfare

We asked Kimberly to answer some questions for us about why she decided to participate in Alternative Breaks and what she loves most about it. So here are her answers.

Which Alternative Break(s) have you previously participated in?

Fairness Campaign—Louisville, Kentucky

What is your favorite thing about Alternative Breaks?

I liked the small-group dynamic Alternative Breaks provides. You get to know every single person on your break very well—which feels unique to such a huge school.

What was your favorite thing you learned from Alternative Breaks?

Part of our Alternative Break was shadowing a lobbyist at the Kentucky State Capitol. Kentucky is in a transition period right now in terms of LGBT rights, and we got to see firsthand how lawmakers and lobbyists are pushing for (or preventing) fairness. I often felt disappointed by the way our system can be manipulated to prevent equality. However, we also met some really influential people, like Christ Hartman (look him up!!) and a state senator, who helped inspire us to stand up for what we believe in.

What is your favorite memory from Alternative Breaks?

Our site leader was featured on a magazine cover and we got to go to the launch party. We felt so cool. We met so many important people—one of whom invited us on to her radio show the next day.

What is a random fact about yourself?
I’m so bad at random facts . . . I’m allergic to a lot of things?
