Meet Anne Wyre!
We asked Anne to answer some questions for us about why she decided to participate in Alternative Breaks and what she loves most about it. So here are her answers.
Which Alternative Break(s) have you previously participated in?
City of Light - Atlanta, GA this winter was the only break I have been on.
What is your favorite thing about Alternative Breaks?
Alternative Breaks sends us students to sites that are not just places in need, but learning opportunities about different social issues which expose us to different people, places, and mindsets.
What was your favorite thing you learned from Alternative Breaks?
I learned that how a person sees themselves is far more important than any label society can put on them. The community we were a part of was full of individuals who, in society, would have been labeled into groups and put in different "boxes," but they weren't at City of Light. We were able to meet very different people from various places who had a strong sense of self and purpose.
What is your favorite memory from Alternative Breaks?
My favorite memory was from the night we helped with the church's weekly event to feed the hungry and homeless. On top of the graciousness we received from the participants, one man told a fellow group member and me that we should never accept a man who has "wooden nickels" because they don't mean anything. He then proceeded to ask if either of us wanted to marry him. It was a fun and humbling night.
What is a random fact about yourself?
I am currently re-reading the Harry Potter series in my spare time!
