AB Participant of the Week: April 18

Meet Kate Strombom!

Year: Junior

Major: Computer Science

We asked Kate to answer some questions for us about why she decided to participate in Alternative Breaks and what she loves most about it. So here are her answers.

Which Alternative Break(s) have you previously participated in?

I went on the Rebuilding Together alternative break in Lafayette, Louisiana.

What is your favorite thing about Alternative Breaks?

My favorite part was getting to meet and interact with so many different people from different places. I got to meet people at the church that hosted us and they were so friendly and kind. I also got to know some Louisiana University students who kept us entertained while we built ramps in the heat. The Rebuilding Together/AmeriCorps reps were super sweet and took our group to Avery Island. And best of all I made some new friends at KU!

What was your favorite thing you learned from Alternative Breaks?

I learned a lot of practical skills from my Alt Break, from how to hang an apron for a ramp to the proper use of power tools. And most importantly I learned how to be patient when what I was doing got messed up.

What is your favorite memory from Alternative Breaks?

My favorite memory was the entire first day we were in Lafayette. Our group went kayaking in the morning. Exploring the swamp via kayak was so peaceful and a fun bonding time for our group. In fact, we learned that the majority of the guys in our group were terrified of the alligators. Then at night we met up with the Rebuilding Together reps we’d be working with for the next week and got to know them, ate Cajun food, and learned how to dance to Zydeco music. It was a Lafayette culture packed day!

What is a random fact about yourself?

My right eye is heterochromatic (half blue and half brown).
