AB Participant of the Week: February 13

Meet Alex Murray!

Year: Freshman

Major: Finance/Environmental Studies

We asked Alex to answer some questions for us about why he decided to participate in Alternative Breaks and what he loves most about it. So here are his answers.

Which Alternative Break(s) have you previously participated in?
This was my first Alt Break, but it will not be my last!

What is your favorite thing about Alternative Breaks?
I loved the chance to go to somewhere completely new with fellow Jayhawks that I did not previously know. The adventure of getting out there, volunteering, and living at a new home for a week was a nice change in pace from staying home all of winter break.

What was your favorite thing you learned from Alternative Breaks?
I got a chance to learn about a topic area that I knew relatively little about beforehand, which was conservation. Having a chance to work with full-time staff members of a Wolf conservation definitely opened up my mind to an issue that I would have never heard about otherwise. I loved getting the chance to help inspire myself to work towards a new cause.

What is your favorite memory from Alternative Breaks?
My favorite memory from my trip was getting the chance to meet with a wolf face-to-face. Going out to my break, I didn’t know much about these animals and had some natural reservations about actually interacting with these animals. The result was a chance to meet some incredible wolves that were totally friendly. Not many people get a chance to say that they were licked by a wolf – which is my new answer to any icebreaker!

What is a random fact about yourself?
I am an avid record collector!
