Meet Katharine Doerksen!
Major: Philosophy, with minors in Business and Peace and Conflict Studies
We asked Katherine to answer some questions for us about why she decided to participate in Alternative Breaks and what she loves most about it. So here are her answers.
Which Alternative Break(s) have you previously participated in?
Project Fairness, to Louisville Kentucky
What is your favorite thing about Alternative Breaks?
My favorite thing about Alternative Breaks was getting to live with a group of KU students for a week. I wouldn’t have gotten to know these people otherwise, seeing as we are involved in different activities and interested in different things. Through Alternative Breaks, I was able to experience life with different people, and see things from other KU students’ perspectives.
What was your favorite thing you learned from Alternative Breaks?
Alternative Breaks showed me that an organization doesn’t have to be large to make a difference. The organization which I volunteered with was quite small; it only had two full-time employees! However, these employees were so committed to seeing the success of the organization that they were making huge steps to promote equal rights in Louisville, Kentucky. Seeing the huge difference that a small number of people can make was truly moving.
What is your favorite memory from Alternative Breaks?
The group which we volunteered for, the Fairness Campaign, was so incredibly grateful for our work. I remember that they thanked us repeatedly for work that had only taken us a few hours each day. Since they didn’t typically receive many volunteers, they were so happy to have us there. I realized that what isn’t a big deal for one person may be life-changing for another.
What is a random fact about yourself?
I enjoy skydiving, and go every year for my birthday!
