Meet Kate Munson!

Major: Social Work

Which Alternative Break(s) have you previously participated in?
St. Louis, MO Kingdom House

What is your favorite thing about Alternative Breaks?
Not only do you get to have new experiences and make connections but you learn about how you can make an impact on the work around yourself.

What was your favorite thing you learned from Alternative Breaks?
That volunteering is continual. It's great to give back to the community, but you have to expand on the volunteering to really make a difference and to make institutional changes in the world.

What is your favorite memory from Alternative Fall Break?
Creating pictures and stories with the elementary aged kids!

What is a random fact about yourself?
I love comedy movies!

Meet Brea Walkley!

Year: Sophomore

Major: Community Health

We asked Brea to answer some questions for us about why she decided to participate in Alternative Breaks and what she loves most about it. So here are her answers.

Which Alternative Break(s) have you previously participated in?
Fall 2016 to The Kingdom House

What is your favorite thing about Alternative Breaks?
Being able to have a hands on volunteer experience and immersing myself in a new atmosphere that allowed me to have an eye opening experience.

What was your favorite thing you learned from Alternative Breaks?
Through the Kingdom House I was able to learn a lot more about how prevalent poverty is in America. It’s something that I take for granted every day and so by going to St. Louis for the Kingdom House, I got a glimpse into how the people who are at or below the poverty line go through day to day tasks.

What is your favorite memory from Alternative Breaks?
On one of the last days my group and I got to do activities with the children while their parents were taking classes that were offered through the Kingdom House. One girl from my group and I decided on the activity to do creative painting where the kids drew a “creature” and had to come up with a story for it, such as who the creature is and how they came to be and what they do. It was a lot of fun to see the kids having fun and the crazy creatures they came up with.

What is a random fact about yourself?
My first concert that I went to was a ZZ Top concert when I was six years old!

Meet Vivek Panchananam!

Year: Junior

Major: Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology with a minor in Philosophy

We asked Vivek to answer some questions for us about why he decided to participate in Alternative Breaks and what he loves most about it. So here are his answers.

Which Alternative Break(s) have you previously participated in?
I went to the Des Moines, Iowa to volunteer at the Iowa Homeless Youth Center

What is your favorite thing about Alternative Breaks?
This organization allows for the opportunity to travel and make an impact in other communities while allowing for volunteers to understanding how organizations in other areas work to solve community problems.

What was your favorite thing you learned from Alternative Breaks?
I learned that to effectively combat issues in a community, a variety of people need to come together to help solve the problem. Diversity amongst community
leaders and volunteers allows for diverse ways to solve problems in the community.

What is your favorite memory from Alternative Breaks?
Getting to meet some of the youth that all had very unique stories and preparing food for them.

What is a random fact about yourself?
I am from Overland Park, Kansas

Meet Emily Scholten!

Year: Junior

Major: Social Work

We asked Emily to answer some questions for us about why she decided to participate in Alternative Breaks and what she loves most about it. So here are her answers.

Which Alternative Break(s) have you previously participated in?
Winter Break 2016- Ohio Youth Services and Fall Break 2016-Iowa Homeless Youth Centers

What is your favorite thing about Alternative Breaks?
I love becoming friends with all the people on your break and how it makes KU feel smaller. I also love how much you learn from the people that work at the organizations that we visit. It is awesome to see how much compassion they have for the people they work with.

What was your favorite thing you learned from Alternative Breaks?
My favorite thing that I have learned from Alternative Breaks is just the general glimpse of people’s lives that you get while on your break. You get to meet a lot of new people that have very interesting lives and careers. It’s cool to see how they got to where they are and what they like about their positions.

What is your favorite memory from Alternative Breaks?
My favorite memory from an Alternative Break was on my break with Ohio Youth Services. We did a lot of work in the juvenile detention centers. On our first visit to the juvenile detention centers, we were beyond nervous. But by our last day, we were confident entering, we did not want to leave, and we had a hard goodbye to the people we had met there.

What is a random fact about yourself?
I am obsessed with the movie Avatar (with the blue people) and cookies.

Meet Grecia Rucoba!

Year: Senior

Major: Accounting

We asked Grecia to answer some questions for us about why she decided to participate in Alternative Breaks and what she loves most about it. So here are her answers.

Which Alternative Break(s) have you previously participated in?

People's City Mission // Lincoln, NE
The Rise School // Houston, TX
826CHI // Chicago, IL

What is your favorite thing about Alternative Breaks?

Alt Breaks is so much more than a volunteering experience. It's a personal growth experience as well. After every one of my trips I've come back to Lawrence as a different person than I was when I left.

What was your favorite thing you learned from Alternative Breaks?

I have learned that our individual experiences are what have made us who we are today. Those who serve and those who are being served should embrace their uniqueness and not conform to others' expectations.

What is your favorite memory from Alternative Breaks?

Of the many wonderful memories I have from my three alternative breaks experiences, being to inspire the students at 826CHI to pursue a college education is one of my favorite.

What is a random fact about yourself?

I like to play the ukulele (badly).
